Soul Midwife

Tender Loving Care for a dying person

"The greatest privilege of a human life is to be a soul midwife for another person"

Transformation of life and death

What is a Soul Midwife?

" A compassionate, non-medical, holistic end of life companion"

A soul midwife guides and supports someone (our 'friend') on their approach to the end of life through to their death.

There is often still an enormous fear to speak about the "death" word due to fear and lack of understanding. We live in a society which finds it difficult to have conversations about death and dying as it can be challenging and emotional however, not talking about it can feel quite overwhelming for the dying person. Talking about dying does not make it happen any faster. There are lots of organisations offering support but we do not know they are there. Fear is overcome by understanding which gives back a sense of control.

When we talk about dying in a warm and comforting way, it can alleviate fears.

It is beneficial to open up conversations with 'our friend' to be able to understand their feelings and wishes in what they want or do not want.  We listen to their choices and support in making them become more accessible.

Talking about death strengthens the relationships of everyone involved such as family, friends, caregivers, healthcare providers, hospices, care homes and hospitals.

What does a soul midwife do?

A soul midwife works to remove the fear of isolation. We are companions from the pre-active stages of dying through to death and beyond as we keep ‘our friend’ company when they feel frightened and alone. Just being present is the greatest gift.

We are a spiritual companion when life can feel like a wave of ebb and flow of challenges.  We are a valuable support in a non-medical, non religious, spiritual and holistic way for 'our friend' and their family and/or carers.

We guide ‘our friend’ through their end-of-life journey to a dignified and peaceful death.  We work with anybody regardless of their age, faith, gender or sexuality and in honour of their beliefs. You do not need to be referred to a soul midwife.

The stages of dying are unique to each person but there are some shared characteristics. The core of our work comes from a deep understanding of our friend through listening and companionship.

We do not fix or rescue but offer support with simple, gentle techniques and compassion though tender loving care so that our friend feels safe, loved and comforted. Our 'friend' determines the pace and we meet them where they are. We each bring our own skills to assist and some of us are experienced holistic therapists who can provide gentle therapies such as reiki . Reiki is non obtrusive and can help to bring a state of calm and peace when life feels out of control and in chaos.

Letting go is a large part of the transition as we gently and skilfully hold the space and follow the inspiring stages in the process of dying.  We are a midwife for the passage to death.
